Pokémon Happiness

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal each and every pokémon has a hidden status which represents happiness. It is also known as Tameness. This can be anything from 1 to 255. Since as I said this status is hidden you must wonder how to get an idea of what it is. Well if you speak to the girl in Goldenrod city she will say 1 of 6 things about the first pokémon in your party. They are and represent:

Possible Happiness Values: Girl's Words:
0-49 It doesn't seem to like you at all. It looks mean.
50-99 You should treat it better. It's not used to you.
100-149 It's quite cute.
150-199 It's friendly towards you. It looks sort of happy.
200-249 I get the feeling that it really trusts you.
250-255 It looks really happy! It must love you a lot.

Values that Pokémon start with are:

Starting Value: Obtained by:
70 Any Ball that is not a friend ball.
120 Hatching
200 Friend Ball

Now you must be wondering what value does <insert Pokémon that evolves based on happiness here> evolve at. Well pokémon that evolve based on Happiness require their happiness value to be 218 or higher.

In order to raise or lower a Pokémon's happiness value you must do certain things. Here is a list of every possible thing that you can do to raise or lower your Pokémon's happiness:

In Pokémon Crystal a Pokémon gains 50% happiness more happiness than normal when it levels up in the area that it was caught. The Poké Seer to the north of Cianwood city will be able to tell you where it was caught. This is only in Pokémon Crystal since only Pokémon Crystal will remember where a Pokémon was caught. If the Pokémon was traded the location it was caught in would the Pokémon Center you were in when you traded for it. Anyone want to go to the Pokémon Center in Mt. Silver?

The Hair Cut Brothers will say 1 of 3 things. Here is a chart telling you what it could be and what it means:

Older or Younger Brother: Says: Gain: Chance:
Older [Name] looks a little happier. First 60%
Older [Name] looks happy. Second 30%
Older [Name] looks delighted! Third 10%
Younger [Name] looks a little happier. First 60%
Younger [Name] looks happy. Second 30%
Younger [Name] looks delighted! Third 10%

Note: On that chart first, second and third refer to the values displayed on the previous chart.
